Brett Basanez  QB  Northwestern

Brett has excellent leadership qualities and a good, strong, accurate arm.  He is a good decision maker on the field and right now, the game is coming really easy to him.  He is making the players around him better and not putting pressure on his defense by throwing a lot of interceptions as he has in previous years.  He is a drop- back QB, but can throw on the run if need be.  By the end of this year, a lot of scouts will be talking about this kid -- you can take that to the bank.

Needs to Improve

You always worry that a player like this will revert back to his very, very bad overall mechanics and decision making of the past.  I do think that he has turned the corner.  He started to improve about half way through his junior year and has been outstanding so far this year.

Brett has a lot to be proud of.  His improvement in every part of his personal game on the field has been outstanding since he started at the QB position for Northwestern.  Iím sure his coaches have been a big part of this improvement, but it  starts with Brett himself.  To be honest, I didnít think he would be able to do it.  I thought his ego would get in the way and that he would struggle accepting the changes that he would need to make in order to become such an accomplished QB.  His biggest strength right now is understanding situational football, never feeling at anytime in a game that his team cannot win and getting the players around him to step up and play to their potential.  This kid has a lot of Jim Kelly in him.  He plans his work, then works his plan.
