Darrell Hackney  QB  UAB

Strengths

Darrell has excellent arm strength to go along with a quick release.  On the snap of the ball, he is very quick in his drops, which gives him an extra amount of time before a blitz can get to him. Darrellís mechanics are very good.  He holds the ball up high and steps to his target; if and when he rolls out, he squares his shoulders to the line of scrimmage.  He has very good accuracy and he shows good leadership qualities and mental toughness.  This kid can play in any kind of offensive system

Needs to Improve

He is a bit stubborn when he makes mistakes.  I think he believes so much in his own athletic talent that he has to prove to himself that he didnít make a mistake when he has thrown an interception. This can be a catch 22 situation because you need to have confidence, but you donít want to be stubborn about your abilities.

Talent Board Round   3

I think this kid has excellent talent and will be taken in the 1st day of the draft.  In fact, if someone drafted him in the 1st round, it wouldnít surprise me.  I love his mechanics and the quickness in his set up. He shows excellent mental toughness and size to handle getting hit. As with all young QBís, he will have trouble learning a system and making good decisions, but that is to be expected.  The big issue for me is will he make the learning curve just a little bit longer by being a little on the stubborn side?  That is a possibility which means you have to question his overall coaching ability.   Donít get me wrong -- he looks to me on film like a good kid who is very competitive and takes accountability for his own mistakes.  The question for me is how many times does he make the same mistake over and over again before he accepts the fact that he shouldnít throw that kind of pass?  I like this kidís talent, but I do feel his success will be tied to how good a coach the team who drafts him has.  If he is drafted by a team that does not have a strong management team, he will have a difficult time adjusting to the talent level of the defenses that go up against him.  He is a strong 1st day pick and just might sneak into the 1st round.  A playoff team with some age at the QB position would be smart to take him in the latter part of the 1st round.
