Derrick Martin   CB   Wyoming

Strengths

Derrick has excellent cover corner ability.  He is quick, has good size and speed and wants to be the man.  He has a decent understanding of zone coverages, but right now, he's better at man-to-man coverage.  Derrick loves a challenge -- you can see it in his eyes.  He has good leaping ability and is strong enough to handle the bigger WRís at the next level.

Needs to Improve

Derrick needs to improve everything for the next level, but the fact is -- he has the ability physically and mentally to improve everything for the next level.

Talent Board Round   2

If you want Derrick, you may have to take him higher than he should be taken.  Normally, I would look at Derrick as having first day talent, but would be picked on the second day because of competition.  However, in this case, I donít think he will last until the second day because of his quickness and his ability to stay with his opponent anywhere on the field.  He is a drag-down tackler.  For a CB, I donít have a problem with that -- but Iím not sure he knows what he's doing when they sweep to his side.  Right now, he doesn't handle coming up to help with the run very well.  Iím not sure if itís because he lacks the instincts, because he is not sure what to do or because he has not learned the correct techniques, but there's definitely a problem in this area.  He is still young and worth the risk as he is still learning.  Derrick should be able to help you right away in your nickel and dime packages as well as on special teams as he learns and becomes the CB that I think he will become.  This is a good developmental CB and if your team picks him on the first day, donít worry about it.  In a few years, he will be a core player and go to a Pro Bowl.
