Freddie Roach   LB   Alabama

Freddie is a head up, wrap up, squeeze and drive tackler with a good burst to the ball.  He is a very smart player who makes up for his lack of pure athletic talent with good instincts and understanding situational football.  He shows some leadership qualities through his play and looks to be a very good teammate.  Freddie is an excellent special teams player and loves the contact.  He is a pure run stuffing LB and would fit a team that uses a 3-4 defense as an ILB.

Needs to Improve

Fred is smart enough to play all three LB positions, but he is limited athletically with a lack of true speed.  Also, he is stiff in the hips so he lacks the needed change of direction skills for the next level.  However, he is an excellent LB and will overcome most of these problems with heart, effort, instincts and intelligence.

Talent Board Round   4

Fred reminds me a lot of Mike Vrabel of the New England Patriots.  He has the same style of game.  He can play inside or outside on the weakside and I have even seen him put his hand down and rush the passer.  He uses those really quick pitter-patter steps to keep himself on balance and help himself to stay gathered so that he can burst to the ball.  He also uses his hands very well to keep the big lineman off of him and it is very hard to cut-block him because of this.  Freddie is not the most gifted athlete that I've ever seen; in fact, he looks pitiful compared to other pure athletic types in this draft.  But when Freddie gets on the field and starts to play football, he makes all of those pretty, better looking athletic players look pitiful.  I call him Fred (Pretty Boy) Roach because when the game starts, he winds up making the other pretty boys look like roaches.
