Vernon Gholston   DE   Ohio St
Vernon is an explosive athlete that can play more than one position in multiple defensive schemes.  He has excellent pass rushing skills.  He has the strength to hold up against the point of attack in the running game also.  Vernon has the talent and the strength, along with the flexibility, to be as good as Lawrence Taylor (former OLB for the Garden State Giants).  He could be used as a right side or left side DE or WLB and SLB in a 4-3 defense.  In fact, it would not surprise me to find out that he could play MLB in a 4-3 defense.  Vernon could also be a LB/DE in a 3-4 defense.  He understands situational football, shows leadership skills and makes the players and coaches around him better.  I call him Vernon (The Force) Gholston because he brings the force with him on every play and you better be ready for it.  Vernon is the type of defensive player you build your defense around.  He has the potential to be something special.
Those people who are confused as to what position he will play the best at for the next level will downgrade Vernon.  I am always amazed when this happens to the caliber of player that Vernon is.  All you have to do is draft the kid, put him on the field and let your system and his talent tell to you where he will play.  Itís called KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid).
After this kid works out, he will be the talk of this draft.  Some teams might rate him as the best player in this draft.  Some will downgrade him because they will not believe their eyes.  They will start to nit pick this kid with dumb excuses.  They canít help themselves Ė at times, scouts doubt their own scouting abilities.  For me, the kid is a top five pick and a top five pick means he could be the very first pick in this draft.  My top five are always interchangeable.  In this draft, for me, they are Sedrick Ellis, Vernon Gholston, Matt Ryan, Darren McFadden and Chris Long.  Any one of these players, in my opinion, has the athletic talent and character to be the very first pick in the draft.  As far as Iím concerned, you can put them in any order that you want.  Thatís how I do my top five picks in every draft.  Vernon is the quickest of the pure pass rushing DEís in this draft because he can explode off the line of scrimmage with strength.  He is smart, instinctive, very strong and has a variety of moves.  He holds his gap well on running plays and can defeat the double team.  Like I said before, he is a force to be reckoned with and if you are not up to the task, then the force will not be with you, it will be against you and believe me, you donít want that to happen.  Vernon is a versatile player who can play more than one position and play them all at a Pro Bowl level.  Think about that for a minute and tell me you would not want to draft a player with that kind of ability as the first player in a draft!  I dare youÖgo ahead, I double dare you!   I call him Vernon (The Force) Gholston because he brings it all on every play with excellent athletic talents.
