Sio has the size, length and athleticism that teams are looking for now in an
outside linebacker for a 3-4 defense. He also has the talent to play OLB in a
4-3 defense, but it looks to me that his impact position is as an OLB in a 3-4
defense. He has good foot speed and long arms that allow him to keep blockers
off his body and string plays out.
He does a good job when singled up in coverage against tight ends or big slot
receivers and understands his assignments when dropping off the line of
scrimmage in zone coverage. Sio is
what I call a scheme linebacker.
This means, in the right scheme and with the right coach, Sio can become a solid
player for the team that drafts him.
Sio is a 5th year senior and it surprises me how he plays with a lack
of quickness, instincts and commitment when a play is in progress.
He is not quick to rush the passer when used in that capacity and when
used in pass coverage he is always looking into the backfield and losing track
of his man. He is not a strong
tackler and lacks solid techniques when tackling.
He is a drag down tackler who doesnít bring his feet and lunges.
He is not a sure tackler also due to his lack of upper body strength.
He tackles too high and doesnít finish plays.
He has the skill to burst to the play, but doesnít do it.
There is a serious lack of aggressiveness, passion and commitment to how
Sio reacts to the play in front of him as it is developing, which is one reason
for way too many broken tackles.
Maybe the biggest problem for Sio is that he thinks too much.
He has the size, speed and athleticism to impact as an OLB in a 3-4 or
4-3 defense. But on the film I have, he
lacks finishing plays, has a lot of broken tackles and hesitates way too much
before committing to the play. The key
here is that you never know with linebackers as most are scheme oriented.
You see that every year in free agency -- a linebacker will sign with a
team and play better than he did when he was with his original team because the
new defensive scheme is a better fit for him.
This is why the linebacker position in general is not rated high on most
teamsí value boards. The exception is
when a linebacker shows excellent leadership skills or has pass rushing skills
to go along with terrific athleticism.
Those two talents will make teams select a linebacker early in a draft.
Sio has good overall talent, but his play on the field is average.
I donít see a great pass rusher or the leadership skills that would make
Sio a player teams would want to select any more than any other linebacker in
