STRENGTHS
Kolton has very good overall athletic talent to play one or more of the
offensive tackle positions at a high level. He shows on film solid lateral
agility and has the size and arm length most teams are looking for in player to
play that position. Kolton has the quickness out of his stance that makes it
easy to see how a team might be tempted to move him inside to the left guard
position. He shows solid upper and lower strength and looks to play with just a
little bit of an edge that will serve him well at the next level. Kolton has the
look of a pro bowl offensive tackle but there is an old saying that looks… can
be deceiving.
CONCERNS
The biggest issue that Kolton has to overcome to reach the potential his talent
suggest is the lack of consistency from one snap to the next. When he is pass
blocking (at times) he is off balance and, on his heels, but when he keeps his
hips over his feet and stays forward and is aggressive with his hands he looks
the part and can stay with just about any style of pass rusher he is up against.
When he is run blocking, there are so many snaps he engages and then doesn’t
bring his feet and lunges and falls off his blocks. Then there are other times
when he is on balance bring his feet and is aggressive and dominates his man.
It’s maddening to watch him on film be so very good on one snap and be so
totally bad the next. Right now, Kolton lacks the mental stamina and consistency
to be a starting offensive tackle in the NFL. But that can change quickly if a
coach can get this kid to relies that you need more than talent to play in the
NFL.
BOTTOM LINE
Kolton has the talent to start at the right tackle position for the team that
selects him but because of his lack of consistency he also has the potential to
get himself or his quarterback injured. That’s what an inconsistent offensive
lineman with a lack of mental strength will bring to the table, the ability to
be injured himself or get others around him injured. Until Kolton gains the core
and mental strength and becomes more consistent that’s what will happen. I like
this kid’s talent but he scares me. His lack of attention to detail and lack of
consistency shows me that he still has some maturing to do before you can trust
him with the franchise playing behind him. All you have to do is look at the
injury history of the quarterback who Kolton has been in charge of protecting
his blind side to know that consistency and not athletic talent is a problem.
Remember, there is nothing worse than an inconsistent offensive lineman. A coach
can work with a less athletically talented offensive lineman if he is consistent
over a more athletic offensive lineman who lacks consistency. Like I always
say…It takes more than talent to play at the next level and Kolton is the poster
boy for that saying. If Kolton plays with consistency than the team that selects
him will have a pro bowl offensive tackle.
