STRENGTHS
Kurt has the size, enough athleticism and arm strength to be a starting winning
quarterback at the next level. He shows good overall accuracy on the deep ball
and can make all the throws with touch and arm strength required to be a
starting quarterback for the team that selects. He shows good accuracy throwing
from the pocket and on the run and shows solid leadership skills through his
play on the field. Kurt has played well against tough competition and his
ability to bring his team from behind making good decisions and throwing the
ball with accuracy is as good as any quarterback coming out in this draft.
CONCERNS
Although Kurt has a good arm he struggles to fit the ball into tight spots
because of his inconsistent mechanics. He doesn’t drive the ball down the field
and this will be a problem when there is help over the top on a receiver. He
also seems to feel that his arm strength is stronger than it actually is and
will try to fit a pass into coverage making bad decisions and throwing
interceptions. There is a learning curve for Kurt but it’s not the normal curve
you see in most quarterbacks coming out of college. Kurt’s learning curve will
be to identify and accept his athletic limitations when throwing the ball. He
has to learn to play within himself and learn to use the players around him
better to win games.
BOTTOM LINE
A quarterback’s main job is to win games. It’s not to be the best player on the
field; it is to be the smartest player on the field. Kurt is a smart player but
he lets his belief in his athletic talent overcome his actual talents. He tries
to do too much athletically throwing the one pass in the game that will break
the game open for his team. Don’t jump to the conclusion that I don’t think that
Kurt is a team player. He is a team player but to a fault. Kurt is the type of
quarterback who will be very good with very good talent around him but once that
talent isn’t on the field because of injuries (etc) Kurt tries to do too much
athletically and that’s when his mechanics start to break down and he makes bad
decisions and he thinks that passing for the big play is the only way his team
can win the game. When former Giants Phil Sims broke into the NFL he had the
same problem. When adversity hits Kurt has to learn to stay within the game plan
to make the plays that can win the game, look for open receivers and not just
your hot receiver. See the whole field like you saw the whole field early in the
game to make plays. Understand the strength and weakness of the defense you’re
going up against and make the plays based on that information. Become more
instinctive instead of mechanical in your thinking DURING a game. Once Kurt does
these little things he can become a top quarterback for the team that selects
him and a more consistent winning quarterback very much like Kurt Warner was. I
like this kid’s development potential to be a starting and potential winning
quarterback in the NFL.
