Tre’Quan Smith   WR   UCF

TALENT
ROUND

STRENGTHS
Tre’Quan might be the smartest and cleverest route runner in this draft class. He is quick to get off press coverage and handles corners and safeties who like to be physical with efficiency and ease. He understands zone coverage’s and how spacing is so important in the context of running a route. He is an excellent blocking receiver and this shows me, on the field maturity and how important he feels it is to be a good teammate. Tre has good overall athletic talent and good speed but like I said is very smart and has learned how to run routes at different speeds and using rhythm to can separation and to be able to run deep routes. Inside the fifty-yard line Tre is a quarterback dream because of his ability to read defenses and catch the ball. H has very soft hands and is tough. He has a good catch radius, will catch contested balls and will adjust to a poorly thrown pass with cool calculated effort. He has a very smooth gate that allows him to keep his hands and head still and this allows him to catch the deep ball better than most in this draft. Tre’Quan is a little bit of a sleeper receiver in this draft. Tre’Quan’s on the field style of play reminds me of former Dolphins and now Browns Jarvis Landry.

CONCERNS
Tre’Quan is not a quick twitch athlete and this might cause concern for some teams about how fast he is and what his playing speed might be. When you watch him on film he looks slow because of his smooth gate and effortless way of running routes. This will affect his draft status but it will not affect his ability to produce at the next level when given the chance. It’s also hard to evaluate Tre’Quan’s ability to be used on the outside and not just as a slot receiver because of the system they used at UCF.

BOTTOM LINE
Tre’Quan has the talent to be an impact receiver at the next level but he will have to prove that he can be more than just a slot receiver for the teams that want to select him. That being said more and more teams are using three receivers and four receiver sets and Tre’Quan will be productive as a blocker and receiver in those sets for sure. As I stated before, Tre’Quan’s overall game reminds me a lot Jarvis Landry but before there was Jarvis there was another player whose talents Tre’Quan reminds me of. That player is former Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward because of his smooth gate, soft hands, and the physical way he blocks. Tre’Quan has a lot of upside to his athletic talents. He can become quicker and stronger with a better conditioning program and when he does he just might wind up being one of the most productive receivers of this class. His work ethic will be challenged to gain the quickness and strength that he needs to gain but after watching him at the Senior Bowl practices I think I saw him emotionally accepting that challenge.
