STRENGTHS
Will is a hell of a physical specimen looking like the Hulk when the Hulk is
green. He has good athleticism with good quick feet and when used in a pulling
system will scare the hemorrhoids out of anyone standing in his way. Will is a
power guard with excellent leadership qualities to make the whole offensive line
into a power blocking offensive line by example. He has an excellent work ethic
along with excellent mental stamina and mental strength to lead by example and
with character. He has solid lateral agility to become a good pass blocker but
his impact will be in the running game blocking on the line and having the
quickness and athleticism to go to the second level and block that poor bug eyed
linebacker who will not have the strength to match up against him. Linebackers
are not going shed this kid and make a tackle, trust me he will bury them so far
into the ground all that will be left is the tombstone showing were that
linebacker was on the field once upon a time. Will (The Hulk) Hernandez, you’ll
never be sorry you selected him. Your opponents will be sorry but you won’t.
CONCERNS
Will’s impact position is at guard and in a play action vertical game because he
is a solid pass blocker but he does have some work to do to improve in that
area. Most of it is techniques and most of his weakness can be minimized by the
offensive system. If you think Will can pass block in a spread offensive system
than I think you’re asking too much of him and he will struggle. He is not a
turnstile pass blocker because he does have the quick feet and enough
athleticism to turn his hips and push his opponent up the field allowing his QB
to manipulate the pocket and that means that the Hulk can be an effective pass
blocking offensive guard.
BOTTOM LINE
The key to pass blocking for a guard is quick feet and the ability to turn your
hips quickly. Will has a good quick first lateral step but lacks the second
quick lateral step because of his size and the fact he stands up to tall to
engage, throwing his balance off and locking his hips after he takes that first
lateral step. Nevertheless when he does get beat in defending against one gap
pass rushers all he has to do is learn not to panic or give up on his techniques
and continue to move his feet and stay with his block and push the player up the
field. I believe he will learn this given the time and good coaching. Will has
played some center in his past but I don’t think that will be in his future. He
is a natural pro bowl right guard who depending on the offensive system should
be a good and possible pro bowl left guard. The truth is you’re not drafting
Will because he is a great pass blocker, your drafting him to become your
dominating run blocking, knock the hemorrhoids out of anyone in front of him
when run blocking who can… pass block but would rather run block. You’re
selecting the Hulk and the word “Finesse” is not in the Hulk’s vocabulary.
